прости - sorry

Depends on the context, сertainly.

I think прости contains more apology than извини.
When I did something really wrong, I say прости.
And when it's not that critically, I say извини

I agree - it depends on context. Actually we can use these both words in different context. When I want to go through, I also can say "sorry" - Простите, пожалуйста. There is also "Прошу прощения", but it's more when you want to bother smbd to ask what time it is or also when you need more space to come through

I think they are sinonyms, but прости is more often used in literary language than in everyday language. Извини is more common. Прости - более литературный вариант. And прости is more "meaningful".

"Извини" говорят, когда вины не чувствуют. "Прости" - это признание своей вины перед человеком, который вам не безразличен.
