Why do they say "på skole" instead of "i skole"?

There is no real answer to this. It is just a set expression.The difference is: To go PÅ SKOLEN means that you attend school or about to go to school. ( Jeg skal på/til skolen). Jeg er i skolen= I am inside the school ( like inside the walls). Jeg er inne i skolen= I am inside the school. Hope this makes sense. :-)

    Every language has its rules when it comes to these small words. You just have to memorize the rules as the reason behind it does not always seem logical to us. To go PÅ SKOLEN sounds like you are walking in top of the school, so it sounds weird to foreign learners of Norwegian. Some rules are just weird...
