What is the correct spelling; my school books say 'yìdiǎnr' but many people online say 'yìdiǎner'. Can someone explain what the difference is?

very simple! you can regard them as same thing. If you meet natives from mainland China. we will include the"e", but books teaching mandarin don't include it(even the book teaching HONG KONG people) So no worries with this problem. it's not a big deal

okay, let me explain it a little for you since im not quite sure if i could explain it well.

have you tried to listen to the pronunciation of "er" and "r"? if so, you would find out the difference. in written they all spot the character "儿". "er" is spicific pinyin for the single character "儿", when "儿" combines with other character to be a noun, for example, "儿子" (son), you have to pronunce "er zi"; however, when "儿" comes to an end of a sentence or a phrase like the example you gave "yidianr", its just a slight pronunce that makes it sound more casually, that's why sometimes we used to remove "e" from "er" in written. in fact, foreigners could hardly get it in normal conversation becasue its just an idiomatic usuage that usually be using in north china. now you can see, the difference between them is the pronunciation, one is to emphasize when comes a noun, the other is only to make the sounds more beautifuly.

remeber, if you never figure it out when get to use "er" or "r", "er" is always correct since its offical pinyin of character "儿".

your teacher is chinese? i think write "R" will help you to pronnonce easily, and if you are the foreign, we can understand why u write "R". but if you want to type this word in the internet, you must use"er".like the "hanji",if i talking with you in the english,i also will write "hanji",but if i'm typing this word ,that's "hanzi",and that's its correct pinyin for the chinese.
