there's a general rule. Masculine words finish in o (singular) or i (plural) for example: ragazzo, ragazzi, whereas feminine words finish in a (singular) or e (plural) like ragazza, ragazze. However, there are many cases where this rule doesn't work and I think you can only learn them by heart, for example: il problemA.

    Normally Italian masculine words terminate in a) are very learned words even Italians has problems to specify, here some examples il sintagma, il paradigma, l'emblema, il teorema, l'anacoreta and so on

In general you note the difference from the final suffixes:
o - i for masculine
a- e for feminine
