In my opinion it is not interchangable. Példa: Kerestem a könyvem. I looked for my book. Megkerestem a könyvem. I have looked for my book/I have been looking for my book.
At 'megkeresem' you find or you hope you the looking for will be succesfull.

Kerestem is an action where the outcome was negative, you didn't find what you were looking for, with megkerestem you say you have looked for it, and you succeeded, you found it.
