Leider ist das Gehalt so niedrig. ”Wusstest du, dass da netto kaum etwas übrig bleibt.” I understand the meaning of the sentence, but can someone explain the grammar of the second sentence.

As a normal sentence it would be "Es bleibt kaum etwas übrig". German sentences often use "es" (it) as a preliminary subject, similar to the "there is..." construction in english. In your cas the "es" has been replaced by etwas (something) and the whole phrase has been transformed into a subordinate clause to fit as an object to the "Did you know"-question. "Did you know that there is nearly nothing (=kaum etwas) left?" would be the english equivalent.
