How do we use ”Quoi!”?

French people always use the word "quoi" in their sentences but how do you know where and when to put this word in a sentence and why "quoi" is used?

Example: "C'est vrai, quoi, je pense que ça ne vaut pas le coup de perdre son temps avec ça quand même..."

Hi, usually ”quoi” is the word of ”what”, but on that example, it shows some frustration and/or a demand of approval.
It would be like saying ” I mean, seriously, why did he do that ?”, or ”This should be done like this, right ?”
It is quite familiar, so don’t use in professionnal relations.
