  • Parlement hongrois.

  • ☺ ________________________________________________________________________________ English text: Hungarian Parliament This week, I’d like to explore my Hungarian heritage by learning about this beauty: the Hungarian parliament building!
  • Have you ever seen something so grand?
  • Those carpets, the red, the gold….
  • The parliament house was built in Gothic Revival style (or ‘Victorian gothic’ - an architectural movement beginning in the late 1740s in England) featuring a symmetrical façade and a dome in the centre – so many features of this movement are extrodinary – the decorative patterns, lancet windows and finial elements (a decorative design element that marks the top of an object).
  • The dome itself represents Renaissance Revival styles, which feature more of classical Italian modes during the 19th century.
  • But here, we are looking on the inside (google the outside!) Approximately 100,000 people were involved in the building’s construction, including 40 million bricks, 500,000 stones and 30kg of gold…The intent for the building was to represent the sovereignty of Budapest’s three cities: Buda, Óbuda and Pest, as propositioned by the Diet in 1879.
  • And boy, does it.
  • A fun fact: the architect of the building became blind before it was complete!
  • Construction began in 1885 and ended in 1904.
  • 19 years of blood, sweat… and more blood.
  • All for an incredible result to represent history. ☺
