To be honest, you can pretty much use them in the same way. An example where you can only use one and not the other doesn't come to mind.

Example:
The awful weather kept me inside.
The horrible weather kept me inside.
The terrible weather kept me inside.
The dreadful weather kept me inside.

If you say any of these sentences, everyone will understand that you thought the weather was really bad so you stayed inside.
