With those, you can try to understand as much as possible and not get frustrated if you can’t follow the story, as you can simply look to the opposite page to read it in your native language. I would not recommend reading short stories, as you are finished with the story before you get used to the common vocabulary that is used in the story and you will have to look up words all the time, which is not fun. If you, however, read, an entire book about pirates, you will know all the words concerning the life of pirates by the end of the book. I watched the series Pablo Escobar - El patrón del mal before I was able to understand Spanish, but I picked up on the frequently used vocabulary very fast and now am able to confuse Spanish speakers with my knowledge of drug related vocabulary. By watching series, you also get a feeling for filler words and the speaking pattern of the language.
