Placing the new words in a sentence and keeping repeating that sentence

A good way to ”cheat” with learning perhaps at least 100 or 200 words is learning what the surnames of famous people / celebrities mean in the language you are learning.

As an experiment, I decided to take a look at the best 101 Australian actor according to IMDB:

https://www.imdb.com/list/ls002018429/

and see how many words we can get for relatively little effort.

Number one of the list is interesting, I’ll mention this later

3. Guy Pearce - ”to pierce” - to go through something with something sharp

4. Heath Ledger - a ”ledger” is a book used in accounting showing debts and credits

5. Russell Crowe - a ”crow” is a type of black bird

6. Hugo Weaving - the verb ”to weave” is to create cloth from threads of something like cotton or wool. There’s also ”Jacki Weaver” at number 25; a ”weaver” is someone who weaves.

8. Geoffrey Rush - to ”rush” is to hurry or do something very quickly.

9. Nicole Kidman - a ”kid” is the young of a goat; also used in English nowadays to describe a young child.

10. Joel Edgerton - ”edge” has a lot of different meanings in English such as ”boundary”, or ”sharp part of a knife”.

That’s just the top 10!

Number 1 in the list,

1. Cate Blanchett

deserves special mention, and not just for her acting abilities

From its French origins, you get from her surname ”blanc”/”blanche”, the French word for ”white”.

Memorise words in meaningful sentences *with context about the meaning*, Change around the sentence or with sentences with new context.

If you repeat the sentence over and over, it might help with recognition of the word but you might not be able to actually use it later on.

You can even combine meanings of surnames with meaningful sentences
