Improving fluency: using the language! Fluency is all about communication ”at a reasonable rate”. So, practice gets you faster and better at communication - either receiving or giving it.

”Fluency” is something quite different from ”accuracy”. ”Fluency” is all about getting the general idea across ”quite quickly”. ”Accuracy” is communicating information ”exactly”. ”Accuracy” can affect ”fluency” because too many mistakes can get in the way of understanding what is communicated.

On the other hand, you can still be fluent even if you make mistakes - as long as understanding is not affected too badly. Now, if you are really accurate and not making any mistakes, then it’s still possible not be fluent if you are going too slowly. If you are speaking or reading very slowly, for example, then communication is happening too slowly and in this case you are not fluent!

Vocabulary: First thing is not to try to learn too many new words each day. A maximum of about 20 is possible for most normal human beings.

DON’T try to learn words from lists. You will very quickly forget most words you learn. Learn words in context, and try to use the words you learn in different contexts. Make sentences with them, listen to and read texts containing them. Speak using them.

Also, learn the definitions of any new words words IN ENGLISH. Don’t learn what they mean by translating into your native language.

    No worries!

Another thing I should add is that for improved fluency, you must also be thinking in the language you are using/learning.

Some people might be ”offended” by the advice about only using the language you are learning to describe the words you are learning, e.g. using only English to describe words in English you are learning. I’m more than happy to explain why students very rarely get beyond a high B1 / low B2 level when translation between the native and learnt language is extensively used.
