? False friends English and French ?

What are some of the most important ones you MUST know or else you will feel very embarrassed?

For example : you should not say:

  • "Je sens mauvais" (direct translation of "I feel bad") but "Je me sens mal". "Je sens mauvais" means "I smell bad" !

Don't translate "I am excited" par "je suis excité(e)" but rather "je suis ravi(e), je suis content(e)". Je suis excité = I am aroused. ?

There’s a lot but i’ll give you an exemple: i’m hot = je suis chaud Don’t say that in french especially if you are a girl ? but say « j’ai chaud »

That's a good one (i.e., je suis chaud versus j’ai chaud) in French. In English, the only way one can really say this is "I'm hot" and it can mean one, the other, or BOTH of the French meanings... . Same goes for the expression "I'm hard." .

There is also, "preservative" ("conservateur" in French), it is not "préservatif" in French which is condoms. ?
