There is usually two semesters in a year.

At least for the US, this can be very tricky. For the traditional program (where you sign up for a few classes in a semester and then attend the classes in an actual classroom for the entirety of the semester, the words I THINK are the same. HOWEVER, with the onset and common usage of online courses this becomes different. For many colleges and universities, the student takes one or two courses for half the semester and then takes another class or two for half the semester. When the classes are split like that, now term and semester mean two different things. The two splits are "terms" but they fall within the semester. Similarly, there are some universities that do not offer the "terms" within semesters, they just keep offering classes for six or eight weeks at a time. You finish one class and then take the next. These would be in terms instead of semesters as well. So in this case the terms can fall into semesters, they can line up with semesters, or they can be separate from semesters. Or in the case of a traditional method of taking classes, they are essentially the same thing.

I hope this helps and if you need clarification of what I'm saying, let me know.
