P.S. If it seems complicated to you it's because IT IS a complicated verb, even among native-English speakers/users!

"To Get" is a complicated little bugger of a verb.

In addition to Kangaroo's perfect illustration of its meaning "to acquire" (also "to procure", "to obtain", etc.) X object(s), the verb "to get" can men "to receive": "Every year I get a lovely gift from my grandfather." Also, the verb "to get" can mean "to comprehend" or "to understand" something, as in this example: "I get what you're saying," (means "I understand/comprehend what you are saying). And yet another way we use "to get" = "to attack" or "to impose one's will" on another, as in the example "I'll get you!" (note: this form of usage oft-times implies "vengeance")

There are still other "meanings" re: the verb "to get", but these ^^^ several examples cover ~95% of when, where, how you'll see it used by Americans, Brits, and Aussies. Drop me a line if you have any questions/require clarification and I'll see that you GET it/them. -exRanger
