    Etymologically, "though" predates "although," the latter being a contraction of "all" and "though" and being equivalent to "even though."

    As for "though" itself, Merriam-Webster's Unabridged Dictionary offers two definitions when the word occurs in the pre-position: In spite of the FACT that or in spite of the POSSIBILITY that. In the post-position, it is equivalent to "however" and similar terms.
