Someone is used if we don’t know the person and there are many people to decide from. Somebody is used when we refer to one person usually.

They have the same meaning, yes. Though "someone" is more formal than "somebody".

    Also, "someone" is related to the phrase "any one" which is older than "anybody" & "somebody". Someone/any one is best to use in writing and to sound formal, because it has been preferred over time.
