the meaning of trigger/triggering?

Okay, this is a fun one.

The word "trigger" is something that a lot of people don't like to hear because they think the speaker is overreacting.

Literally, a trigger is something that makes someone upset because of a past trauma. For example, if someone saw a person die in a gunfight, they might be "triggered by guns" or "triggered by loud noises, like fireworks".

However, there is an outspoken group of individuals on the internet who like to use it for silly things, which many people who actually suffer from PTSD dislike.

In a joke, one might say: "I'm triggered by this hot dog because it reminds me of a man and men are evil."
