    • Are zoos the right place for animals?

    • Zoos are more and more a source of controversy.
    • Where some see animal protection and scientific progress, others see cruelty and suffering.
  • Is it still morally acceptable to keep zoos open?
    • Both texts discuss the topic from opposite views.
    • The first text argues that zoos should be banned because despite the fact that many visitors consider visiting zoos enjoyable and an easy way to get closer to wildlife, animals are unfairly imprisoned, which affects negatively their quality of life.
    • To my mind, animals should live in freedom in order that they live by their natural instincts.
    • Living behind bars prevent beasts from developing both survival and social skills, which often result in mental disorders.
    • Moreover, space is very limited for big mammals and consequently, they struggle to move as they would in their habitat, which provokes them physical pain.
  • In contrast, the second passage defends the need of keeping zoos open not only to protect endangered species that could not survive in the wild, but also to provide scientists with an ideal environment to conduct their researches.
  • In my view, we should be protecting the areas where the endangered species live instead of taking them from their habitat.
  • I would agree that there were recovery centres when natural disasters occur for animals to be looked after and then taken back into nature.
  • But, I would never agree that there were centres to undertake research on animals.
  • To summarize, zoos are prisons for animals, who have done nothing to be sentenced to life imprisonment.
  • However, it would be acceptable to have recovery centres to provide animals with healthcare in case of natural catastrophes.
