This novel written in 1929 was a love story that inspired Hemingway when he was part of the Red Cross ambulance corps in Italy at the end of the First World War.
The book follows the evolution of a young American ambulance driver and an English nurse’s romance and their journey through Italy.
Hemingway takes them from the army base in the mountains of the modern territories of Trentino and Milan.
He writes of a dramatic escape across Lake Maggiore to Switzerland in the final chapters of the story.
