sun79 profile picture sun79   I remember that our educational center for illiterates chose a book called 《常用2000字》 for textbook. So I figure 2k characters might be enough for regular newspaper, fictions reading. While I learn English, I fell word is essential for further learning but the most boring part of it too. I recommend to learn basic Chinese characters such as 2k ASAP, no need to learn them by rote, especially their varieties of meanings, roughly understanding is enough, then master them profoundly by means of widely reading, also you’ll extend your characters finally by this way.
