Destination highlights
Stavanger
Norway's fourth-largest city mixes medieval history, its former role as a fishing port and a modern waterfront. The old centre contains exceptionally well-preserved wooden buildings, many dating from the eighteenth century. Øvre Holmegate, known locally as Fargegata or the street of colours, is one of its best-known sights.
Preikestolen / Pulpit Rock
This conspicuous cliff above Lysefjord was shaped by frost erosion. The hike follows roughly 2.5 miles each way, about 5 miles return, and normally takes around four hours. The route crosses a wet area on a wooden bridge, climbs a steep stair section and opens onto Tjødane, an area with three small lakes and an emergency shelter, before reaching the Preikestolen plateau.
Kjeragbolten and Lysefjord
Kjeragbolten is a boulder wedged in a mountain crevice and one of Norway's most striking viewpoints. The hike rises roughly 1,000 metres above the turquoise Lysefjord. The 42-kilometre fjord lies east of Stavanger between light-coloured granite walls, with Lysebotn at its eastern end and Forsand and Oanes to the west. In places, rock faces fall almost vertically for more than 1,000 metres and the fjord is as deep as the surrounding mountains are high.
Trolltunga
Trolltunga stands around 1,100 metres above sea level and approximately 700 metres above Lake Ringedalsvatnet. The hike crosses high-mountain terrain to the ledge at about 1,180 metres, following part of an old route across the Hardangervidda plateau. It is certified as a Norwegian Scenic Hike and offers extensive views of lakes and snow-capped mountains.
Buarbreen glacier and Odda
The Buarbreen hike is a popular Hardangerfjord route, combining views of the blue glacier tongue with a nearby waterfall. Odda, sometimes described as the secret capital of Hardanger, lies between the Hardangervidda and Folgefonna national parks at the inner end of Sørfjord. Nearby waterfalls include the stepped 515-metre Tjørnadalsfossen and the 165-metre double waterfall Låtefossen, whose two streams join above an old six-arched stone bridge.
Optional Bergen and fjord experiences
- Bergen: time permitting, explore the city surrounded by mountains and fjords, including the UNESCO-listed wooden wharf at Bryggen and the Fløibanen funicular to Mount Fløyen.
- RIB fjord safari: an optional guided ride through Hardangerfjord, with natural and cultural stories and possible sightings of porpoises or eagles.
- Norwegian sauna: an optional sauna and fjord swim with mountain views.
- Norway in a Nutshell: an optional self-guided combination of scenic trains, including the Flåm Railway, a cruise through UNESCO-listed fjords such as Nærøyfjord and connecting buses between Bergen or Oslo and fjord villages such as Flåm and Gudvangen. Depending on the selected package, it includes one or two nights of accommodation, the fjord cruise, scenic rail journey and necessary buses.
Complete planned program
Arrival and meet-and-greet
Travel to Stavanger and meet the guide and other participants at Stavanger bus terminal or at the night's accommodation. This is the preparation and group-arrival stage, with no hike planned.
Kjeragbolten hike
After an early breakfast, take the shuttle from Stavanger to the trailhead. The challenging hike normally takes five to six hours, covers about 12 km and involves approximately 1,000 metres of ascent and descent above Lysefjord. Return by shuttle to the accommodation to rest for the following day.
Preikestolen hike
After breakfast, travel toward the trail by the planned scenic ferry/shuttle connection. The hike covers about 15 km according to the detailed distance table, takes approximately four to five hours and involves around 500 metres of ascent and descent. Return to Stavanger for rest, dinner and drinks at participants' expense.
Stavanger finish or continuation to Odda
- Short-option participants: after checkout, self-explore Stavanger's old town if time permits, then continue to Stavanger Airport.
- Full-trip and Trolltunga-leg participants: travel from Stavanger to Odda using connecting buses. Meet participants joining only for the Trolltunga section, make a short excursion around Odda's waterfalls and, time permitting, complete a short walk before supermarket shopping and dinner.
Trolltunga hike
Start early and take the shuttle to the trailhead, subject to suitable weather. The detailed source lists a demanding 20-25 km day, normally seven to nine hours, with approximately 350-500 metres of ascent and descent depending on the stated route measure. Return to the accommodation for dinner and rest.
Optional Buarbreen glacier hike
Participants who want another hiking day can join the optional Buarbreen glacier route. It is described as a hidden gem of roughly 10 km and three to four hours. The outbound taxi to the trailhead is included; the return taxi is not included because participants can walk back to the accommodation. Regroup later for an optional Norwegian sauna and dinner.
Departure or fjord extension
- Check out in Odda and take the bus to Bergen bus station, continuing to Bergen Airport for participants heading home.
- Participants with the Norway in a Nutshell extension travel from Odda toward Voss and continue the fjord itinerary to Bergen or Oslo.
- Longer extension packages can include time to explore Oslo and its museums or Bergen and its natural surroundings before departure.
Trip formats
The Eventbrite long description offers three core ways to join, although its printed calendar dates are obsolete:
- Complete trip: Stavanger, Kjeragbolten, Preikestolen, continuation to Odda, Trolltunga and Buarbreen.
- Kjeragbolten and Preikestolen section: Stavanger-based first leg, ending after the two Lysefjord hikes.
- Trolltunga and Buarbreen section: join in Odda for the Hardanger leg.
Optional two-, three- or four-night fjord packages may extend the journey. The exact durations, availability and current dates must be checked against the ticket selected.
Meeting and finishing logistics
- The current Eventbrite event begins at Stavanger bus terminal at 20:00 on September 3 and ends at 08:00 on September 8, 2026.
- The source also identifies Odda bus station as the joining and finishing point for the Trolltunga-only leg.
- Arrival flexibility and any late-arrival arrangement are coordinated after booking. A late arrival in Odda may mean missing the local Odda excursion.
Difficulty and distances
- Arrival day: no hike.
- Kjeragbolten: about 12 km, five to six hours, approximately 1,000 metres ascent and descent.
- Preikestolen: about 15 km, four to five hours, approximately 500 metres ascent and descent.
- Odda discovery: less than 5 km.
- Trolltunga: approximately 20-25 km, seven to nine hours; the source gives 350-500 metres ascent and descent depending on its route measure.
- Buarbreen glacier: about 10 km.
- Departure/transfer walking: generally less than 5 km; optional fjord-extension transfer day less than 3 km.
The overall level is intermediate to hard. Expect long distances at a moderate group pace, multiple breaks, steep paths and stairs, moderate to substantial elevation, and a need for sure-footedness and good fitness.

- An English-, Russian- and German-speaking community guide and leader throughout the booked trip.
- Three or six nights of shared accommodation, depending on the selected core option.
