This is not a typical hiking trip but a true wilderness immersion in South Africa's Greater Kruger region. You will experience an untamed landscape on foot, walking with expert trail guides rather than observing only from a vehicle. Along the way, the guides explain how the bushveld ecosystem functions, how wildlife coexists and why protecting these environments matters. The journey combines a four-day, three-night guided wilderness trail, remote bush camping, safari-lodge stays and a visit focused on conservation and community projects. Participation also supports conservation awareness and fundraising. The experience is designed around connection to the land, wildlife and fellow travellers.

Trip options and duration

Option 1.1: main wilderness trail package, September 22-28, six nights.
Option 1.2: main wilderness trail plus the Cape Town extension, September 22-October 3, eleven nights.
Option 2.1: Johannesburg extension followed by the main wilderness trail, September 19-28, nine nights.
Option 2.2: Johannesburg extension, main wilderness trail and Cape Town extension, September 19-October 3, fourteen nights.

Meeting and finishing points

Main trip: meet the guide and group at Hoedspruit Airport / Eastgate Airport (HDS) at 18:00 on Tuesday, September 22. The main trip returns to the same airport at 10:00 on Monday, September 28.
Johannesburg extension: meet at O.R. Tambo International Airport on Saturday, September 19. The source permits arrival at any time that day, with detailed coordination provided closer to departure.
Cape Town extension: the extended itinerary finishes at Cape Town Airport on Saturday, October 3; the exact flight-compatible drop-off is coordinated with participants.

If you plan to leave earlier or later, record this in the participant information sheet shared closer to the event so that arrangements can be adapted.

Difficulty and suitability

The overall experience lasts seven days for the main package, including four days and three nights on the wilderness trail. It is rated moderate. Good fitness is required, but no technical hiking is planned.

The trip is intended for nature lovers, adventure seekers, first-time wilderness hikers, conservation supporters and travellers looking for a meaningful outdoor experience.

Detailed program

Day 1 - Tuesday, September 22: arrival and welcome

Arrive at Hoedspruit Airport (HDS).
Group shuttle to a safari hotel in Hoedspruit.
Evening at leisure to settle in, relax and prepare for the trail.

Day 2 - Wednesday, September 23: trail begins

Breakfast at the lodge.
Shuttle to the trail starting point in Greater Kruger.
Meet the professional wilderness trail guides.
Safety briefing, orientation and start of the wilderness hike.
Overnight bush camping.

Days 3 and 4 - Thursday and Friday, September 24-25: deep wilderness

Full days on the trail through varied bushveld ecosystems.
Learn about wildlife tracking, ecology and wilderness survival skills.
Camp each night under the African sky and share time around the fire.

Day 5 - Saturday, September 26: trail completion

Final morning walk and return to the trail starting point.
Trail completion and celebration.
Transfer to a safari lodge inside Greater Kruger for a two-night stay and a well-earned rest.

Day 6 - Sunday, September 27: conservation insight

Second night at the safari lodge.
Visit Koru Camp to discover conservation and community initiatives supported by participation.
Time to reflect, relax and enjoy the final night in the bush.

Day 7 - Monday, September 28: departure

Breakfast at the lodge.
Shuttle to Hoedspruit Airport for onward journeys.

Included in the main trip

Johannesburg extension inclusions

Included only with options 2.1 or 2.2:

Three additional nights of accommodation in Johannesburg.
Two days of guided visits in Johannesburg, including the Cradle of Humankind and the Apartheid Museum.
Shuttle transfer from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit Airport.

Cape Town extension inclusions

Included only with options 1.2 or 2.2:

Five additional nights of accommodation in Cape Town.
Five days of guided visits in Cape Town and the surrounding area, including the cable car, Robben Island, whale watching, penguins in their natural surroundings and further local activities.
Airport transfers.

Not included

Flights to and from South Africa.
Domestic flights required by optional extensions.
Travel insurance.
Personal expenses.
Optional tips.

Flying is the fastest way to reach Hoedspruit Airport. Flights are not included in the standard package.

After booking

The ticket confirmation page provides access to a dedicated WhatsApp group used to meet fellow participants, coordinate arrivals and stay in touch.
The group description contains a link to a detailed trip briefing explaining what to expect and how to prepare.
It also contains a shared Google Photos album for trip photos and videos.

Cancellation and operational conditions

Free cancellation is stated up to 21 full days before the start of the trip; after that, cancellation up to five days before departure gives a 50% refund.
If the event is cancelled by the organizer, participants receive a full refund.
A minimum of five participants is required; the trip may be cancelled if this threshold is not reached.
The program and venue may change because of extreme weather, group characteristics or group size.
The organizer may modify the route, accommodation or hike order, reschedule hikes or cancel the trip when necessary.

Free cancellation up to 7 full days before the start of the trip. After that, cancel up to 5 days before the trip to get a 50% refund.
If the event is cancelled by Urbanature Travel (UNT), you will get a full refund (excluding any airfares), unless you have purchased a flight inclusive package directly with Urbanature Travel (UNT) in which case you will get a refund including the flights.
Please note that the program, as well as the venue is subject to change due to extreme weather conditions, as well as to the characteristics and size of the group.
Urbanature Travel (UNT) needs a minimum of 5 participants for this trip to take place, else we may cancel this trip.
UNT reserves the right to cancel the trip, modify the route, change the accommodation or re-schedule hikes and without prior notice.
