The examples don’t say why it is different in meaning. Even for a native speaker (as I am), it is not possible to see the difference. Example 2B can also be written as ”Even though it was a cool day, I went swimming” (and 2A can also be inverted in this manner)

I totally agree with you. I’m pretty sure that a non-native speaker would be thrown into total confusion about what is going on. The examples don’t really illustrate any difference in meaning. ”Although” and ”even though” both mean ”in spite of something” - which implicitly is the expression of a contrast. Perhaps the original author himself doesn’t understand the difference in meaning...

The essential differences between ”although” and ”even though” are 1/ about emphasis - ”even though” is more emphatic than ”although” and 2/ formality - ”although” is more often used in formal contexts than ”even though”. In addition, ”even though” is more frequently used in spoken contexts than ”although”, which predominates in writing and particularly in such formal contexts.

”Although” does tend to be often used for abstract contrasts. That’s the result of it being predominately used in formal contexts.

The original author of this lesson really should improve the given examples in order to establish a contrast between them...
