Basic Emotions[edit | edit source]

We experience different emotions in our day-to-day lives. Below are some basic emotions in Panjabi:

Panjabi Pronunciation English
ਖੁਸ਼ khush happy
ਉਦਾਸ udaas sad
ਗੁਸਾ gusaa angry
ਹੈਰਾਨ hairaan surprised
ਡਰ dar afraid
ਅਸ਼ਚਰਜ ashchary amazed
ਜੀਰਨ jheeran nervous

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹੋ? (Kee tusi khush ho?) (Are you happy?)
  • Person 2: ਹਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹਾਂ। (Haan main khush haan.) (Yes, I am happy.)

Complex Emotions and Feelings[edit | edit source]

In addition to basic emotions, we also experience complex emotions and feelings. Below are some examples:

ਸ਼ਰਮਿਂਦਗੀ sharmindagi embarrassment
ਉਲਜ੍ਜਾ uljhaa confusion
ਹੱਬੜੀ habri nervousness
ਜਦਲਤ jadlat irritability
ਪਸਾਰ pasaar exhaustion

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: ਕਿਹੜੇ ਦੇ ਘਬਰਾਹਟ ਹੈ? (Kihde de ghabaraahat hai?) (What is causing your anxiety?)
  • Person 2: ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਪੜੇਸ਼ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਿਤ ਹੈ। (Mainu eh paraysh naal sambandhit hai.) (It is related to my studies.)

expressing strong emotions[edit | edit source]

Sometimes we feel strongly about something and need to express it. Below are some words and phrases to help you communicate these intense feelings:

ਖੇਡ ਲਓ khaedh lao kidding
ਗਸਤੀ gastee annoyed
ਓਹ oh oh (expression of surprise)
ਗਲਤ galat wrong
ਧੋਖਾ dhokhaa betrayal

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: ਯਾਰ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਵਰਤਵਾ ਗਲਤ ਹੈ। (Yaar tuhada waratwa galat hai.) (Friend, your behaviour is wrong.)
  • Person 2: ਮੈਂ ਖੇਡ ਲਈ। (Main khaedh layee.) (I was just kidding.)

Idioms about emotions[edit | edit source]

Idioms are fun ways to express ideas. Below are some idioms related to emotions and feelings:

ਮੇਰਾ ਦਿਲ ਚੱਕਮ meraa dil chakkam my heart is light (I feel happy)
ਮੇਰਾ ਰੰਗ ਕਲਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ meraa rang kalaa ho giaa My colour has turned black (I'm sad)
ਮੇਰੇ ਤੇ ਆਉਣਾਂ ਕਰੋ mere te aonaa karo make me come (I'm feeling lonely)
ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਲੰਘਾਉਣਾ khush ho ke ghar langhaauna To arrive home happily (To be able to come home happily)

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਰੰਗ ਕਲਾ ਕਿਉਂ ਹੈ? (Tuhada rang kalaa kyon hai?) (Why are you sad?)
  • Person 2: ਮੈਂ ਕੁਝ ਘਰ ਲੰਘਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੁਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ। (Main kuchh ghar langhaauna chaahunda haan.) (I want to be able to come home happily.)

In Panjabi culture, it is customary to greet a person by placing your right hand on your heart. It signifies warmth and friendliness.
