As a Georgian language teacher with 20 years of experience, I believe that learning about the different regions and landscapes of Georgia is crucial to understanding Georgian culture. In this lesson, we will explore the geographic regions of Georgia, including its mountains, coast, and valleys.

Regions of Georgia

Georgia is a country located at the crossroads of Western Asia and Eastern Europe. It is divided into 9 different regions, each with its own unique landscape and culture. The regions are:

  • Adjara
  • Guria
  • Imereti
  • Kakheti
  • Kvemo Kartli
  • Mtskheta-Mtianeti
  • Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti
  • Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti
  • Shida Kartli

Adjara

Located in the western part of Georgia, Adjara borders the Black Sea and Turkey. It is known for its subtropical climate and beautiful coastline. The region is also home to the historic city of Batumi, which has become a popular tourist destination.

Guria

Located on the Black Sea coast, Guria is known for its beautiful beaches and unique cuisine. Its capital city, Ozurgeti, is home to many historic landmarks, including the Guria Historical-Ethnographic Museum.

Imereti

Located in the central part of Georgia, Imereti is known for its varied landscape, which includes both mountains and valleys. The region is also home to many important historical sites, including the Gelati Monastery, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kakheti

Located in the eastern part of Georgia, Kakheti is known for its beautiful vineyards and historic wineries. The region is also home to many important religious sites, including the Alaverdi Monastery and the David Gareja Monastery Complex.

Kvemo Kartli

Located in the southeastern part of Georgia, Kvemo Kartli is known for its diverse population and unique cultural heritage. The region is home to many important historical sites, including the ancient city of Dmanisi, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Mtskheta-Mtianeti

Located in the central part of Georgia, Mtskheta-Mtianeti is known for its stunning mountain landscapes and rich history. The region is home to many important sites, including the historic city of Mtskheta, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti

Located in the northwestern part of Georgia, Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti is known for its beautiful mountain landscapes and traditional culture. The region is home to many important historical sites, including the Ushguli village, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti

Located in the western part of Georgia, Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti is known for its rich cultural heritage and beautiful landscapes. The region is home to many important sites, including the Martvili Canyon and the Zugdidi Botanical Garden.

Shida Kartli

Located in the central part of Georgia, Shida Kartli is known for its rich history and stunning landscapes. The region is home to many important historical sites, including the ancient city of Gori, which is the birthplace of the famous Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.
