Language/Javanese/Grammar/Adjectives
Hi Javanese learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing adjectives in the Javanese language. Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns and pronouns. They can be used to express a variety of meanings, such as size, shape, color, age, and more.
Adjective Formation
In Javanese, adjectives are formed by adding suffixes to nouns and pronouns. The suffixes used depend on the type of adjective being formed.
Size
To form adjectives that describe size, the suffix -gédé is added to the noun or pronoun. For example:
- kambing (goat) → kambinggédé (big goat)
- dia (he/she) → diagédé (tall he/she)
Shape
To form adjectives that describe shape, the suffix -lurus is added to the noun or pronoun. For example:
- papan (board) → papanlurus (flat board)
- dia (he/she) → dialurus (straight he/she)
Color
To form adjectives that describe color, the suffix -merah is added to the noun or pronoun. For example:
- kucing (cat) → kucingmerah (red cat)
- dia (he/she) → diamerah (red he/she)
Age
To form adjectives that describe age, the suffix -tua is added to the noun or pronoun. For example:
- anak (child) → anaktua (old child)
- dia (he/she) → diatua (old he/she)
Adjective Placement
In Javanese, adjectives usually come after the noun or pronoun they are modifying. For example:
- kucingmerah (red cat)
- diatua (old he/she)
However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, when the adjective is used to describe a person's physical appearance, it can come before the noun or pronoun. For example:
- merahkucing (red cat)
- tua dia (old he/she)
