The Darvaza Gas Crater

The Darvaza Gas Crater, often referred to as the "Door to Hell," is a natural gas field in Derweze, Turkmenistan. This dramatic landmark has been burning with a constant flame for over 40 years, attracting tourists and locals alike.

The story of the Darvaza Gas Crater dates back to 1971, when Soviet geologists accidentally punctured a natural gas chamber while drilling. The ground collapsed and formed a large crater, releasing the fumes. To prevent the spread of methane gas, the geologists decided to set the gas on fire, thinking it would burn out within a few weeks. However, the gas still burns to this day, creating an eerily beautiful sight.

Visiting the Darvaza Gas Crater

The Darvaza Gas Crater is located in the heart of the Karakum Desert, about 260 kilometers (160 miles) north of the Turkmen capital of Ashgabat. A visit to this unique landmark requires an off-road vehicle and a knowledgeable guide, as there are no marked roads leading to it. The best time to visit the crater is at night when the flames create an otherworldly atmosphere.
