In order to discuss health matters, it’s helpful to have a good understanding of basic body parts. Here are some commonly used vocabulary words related to body parts:

Talking about Symptoms

One of the most important parts of discussing health is being able to describe the symptoms that you are experiencing. Here are some phrases and vocabulary that describe common symptoms:

Amharic Pronunciation English
ዶሮ እስከ dorro eske I have a headache
አይሰማም እስከ aysemmam eske I don’t feel well
መስመር መጐናጸል mesmar m'ogonachal I feel dizzy
የከንቱን ህመም እስከ yek'entu'n hem'm eske I have a stuffy nose
የእግር ዕርከብ እስከ ye'igr imperkib eske I have a sore throat

Use of the Word “የእግር ዕርከብ”

As we see in the table above, the word “የእግር ዕርከብ” (ye'igr imperkib) is used to refer to a sore throat. It's interesting to note that in Amharic the word for “neck” and “throat” is actually the same, so it can lead to some confusion.

Furthermore, Ethiopians generally use the term "ጣት" (t'ut) which means fever for both fever and temperature indicators.
