When speaking use 'the'
Example. "We're getting married on the second of July"
In writing, 'the' and 'of' are frequently omitted. 'We're getting married on 2nd July.'
 February 2013
I don`t know how to explain it clearly, but I think these examples might help you see different ways of writing dates:

On the 15th of February we went for a picnic.
On February 15h we went for a picnic.
On the 15th of February let`s go for a picnic.
Let`s go for a picnic on February 15th.
He has a competition coming up in March. When exactly? On the 14th.
She was born on the 9th of July.
She was born on July 9th.

I hope this helps.

Sorry I made a typo. The second example should say "On February 15th we went for a picnic." I'm glad it helped you
